A SUMMER OF THRIVING: DEVOTIONAL

by Elizabeth Jordahl 10 Jun 2025

"You can't win all the time; you gotta have some downs to realize when you're up," - Carrie Underwood

Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers; but his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers. - Psalm 1:1-3

There is something about summer that invites us to thrive! The sunshine, the green plants growing all around us, the warmth helping us to defrost from winter. This is a season filled with growth, joy and a sense of thriving! It can also be a season of just surviving…

Our days may be filled with summer camps, big gatherings, parties, endless activities to keep us all busy. Maybe we wake up with the best intentions of enjoying this season - filling it with quiet moments of faith, time with our families, and creating joy filled memories. Yet we get swept up in the whirlwind of summer… and it can pass us by.

I’ve been there! It’s hard not to get swept up by busyness. Even when I want to create an atmosphere of thriving for myself and my family. I have big plans for sunrise quiet times, family walks, evenings filled with quiet music and community. But instead, I end up filling my days with rushed moments, and just barely getting to actually enjoy all the time.

Yet, one of the beautiful things about faith is that God calls us to thrive, not just survive. He will always meet us where we are - busy, joyful, chaotic, sad, worried, overwhelmed, content. No matter the season we find ourselves in, God wants us to grow. He will be beside us and help us to learn to thrive!

Growing & Thriving

“You do not just wake up and become the butterfly. Growth is a process.” - Rupi Kaur

Instead of simply coasting through summer, what if we used this season to thrive? What if we allowed God to cultivate something new within us? Here are a few simple ways to grow in faith and joy this season:

  1. Nourish your soul.

Plants need water and sun to thrive and grow and flourish. As humans, we also need things that nourish us! Scripture, worship, prayer, journaling, meditation and silence are all different ways that we can choose to nourish our souls and help ourselves to thrive.

  1. Refresh your routine.

Your daily routines can become opportunities to thrive! Listen to joyful music while you drive, start reading a new and encouraging book instead of scrolling on social media, or pray while you do chores. How can you add moments to thrive in your routines?

  1. Get outside.

All of the great outdoors can be encouraging, life-bringing and give way to wonder and gratitude. So, find ways to get yourself and your family outside! Go for walks in your neighborhood, check out a national park, or even try camping in a beautiful location!

  1. Grow your community.

Summer can be a great time to build your community! Go attend local events, or have all of your friends over for a meal. Get some time with your friends. Be intentional with time together this summer!

  1. Have grace for yourself.

No one can be perfect. Which means that even with all of the best intentions and efforts, there is a likelihood that this summer won’t go exactly like you want. However, you can choose every day to start fresh. Forgive yourself and give yourself space to make mistakes.

So, friends, let us all take a deep breath. This summer is not just about making it through—it’s about blooming where God has planted you. Let’s thrive together under the sun and in His love.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” - John 16:33

"With every choice, you create the life you'll live; with every decision you design it," - Mollie Marti

QUESTIONS AND REFLECTIONS

One of my favorite things to do is to ponder, reflect and journal, it gives me time to think through all the various aspects of life. May you find time in your day or your week, to sit and reflect. You can use these questions as a starting place for your reflection, or just an addition to your normal journal rhythm.

  1. What do you want this summer to look like? What goals do you have?

  2. How can you focus on thriving this summer?

  3. Who can you bring along with you in this journey toward thriving?

  4. Where have you seen God at work in your life lately?

  5. What’s one thing from this blog that you want to use or put into action?

"You keep learning how to let go and live the life that you actually have, as opposed to the life you thought you were going to have." - Greta Gerwig

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.” - John 10:10
