BLOOM WHERE YOU’RE PLANTED: EMBRACING GOD’S PLAN IN EVERY SEASON
“Every flower blooms at a different pace.” — Suzy Kassem
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. - Proverbs 3:5
There have been so many years that I have found myself discontent with my stage of life. Longing for something different. I used to think that if I could just get to the next season of life, then everything would be perfect. It would fall into place effortlessly. Maybe you’ve been there too - waiting for the perfect job, the ideal home, a dream relationship, or the end of a difficult season. We just keep telling ourselves, once I get over there to that place, I’ll finally be happy. I will be content. All my problems will be solved. But what if that is not what God is asking us to do. What if He is calling us to bloom right where we are?
Learning to Trust
“If you tend to a flower, it will bloom, no matter how many weeds surround it.” — Matshona Dhliwayo
I really wish that I had a green thumb. My father-in-law does. His home is filled with plants, some of which are about six feet tall! His backyard is an actual garden, tomatoes, trees, flowers, zucchini, on and on. I know all of these plants well because we often water all the plants for him while they travel. Sometimes at the height of summer, it can take an hour a day to water every single plant that he has. I am amazed! He seems to know what can grow in our harsh and dry summers, as well as helping indoor and hanging plants to thrive. His plants seem to thrive and grow beyond what I can make sense of.
And isn’t that just like what God does in our lives? He plants all of us where He knows we will thrive. Even if, to us, it seems like we are in the wrong place, or we feel like maybe we are missing something. We might even try to resist His plan or try to “fix” it.
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” - Isaiah 55:8-9
Just like all the wildflowers in the field, and the plants around the world, we don’t get to choose the soil we grow in. But we do get to learn to trust the one who planted us there!
Embrace the Season You Are In
“A flower does not think of competing with the flower next to it. It just blooms.” — Zen Shin
Do you find yourself in a season of difficulty? Or even just longing for something different in your life? Here are a few things that have helped me to accept whatever season I find myself in:
-
Embrace the Now
I spent years wishing I was in a different place—dreaming about a future that looked better than my present. But all that wishing left me feeling discontent. God calls us to be present in the season we’re in, whether it’s a time of growth, waiting, or even struggle.
Try This: Instead of focusing on what’s next, ask yourself: What is God teaching me right now?
-
Find a Purpose
It’s easy to think that maybe someday God will call us to some big purpose. But the truth is - He is using all of us today, right where we are. Try to make a difference in the places you find yourself - your job, your home, your family, your friends, your church, your community.
Try This: Ask God to show you one way you can be a blessing today—whether it’s sending an encouraging text, praying for someone, or simply choosing joy in your circumstances.
-
Trust the Process
Every season has a reason, even the hard ones. Sometimes, what feels like a setback, a delay, or a wrong turn is actually preparation for what will be next. It can be a time to grow in faith and hope, and joy, and strength.
Try This: Reflect on a past season that felt uncertain but ultimately led to something beautiful. Let that be a reminder that God is working, even when you can’t see it yet.
Wherever you are right now—whether it’s a season of waiting, thriving, or uncertainty—know this: God hasn’t forgotten you. You were planted with purpose, and He is working in your life in ways you may not see right now.
So, instead of longing for the next thing, let’s choose to bloom where we have been planted. Let’s trust the Gardener, embrace the season, and live fully in the place He has us today.
Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act. He will bring forth your righteousness as the light, and your justice as the noonday. - Psalm 37:4-6
“Flowers don’t worry about how they’re going to bloom. They just open up and turn toward the light and that makes them beautiful.” — Jim Carrey
QUESTIONS AND REFLECTIONS
One of my favorite things to do is to ponder, reflect and journal, it gives me time to think through all the various aspects of life. May you find time in your day or your week, to sit and reflect. You can use these questions as a starting place for your reflection, or just an addition to your normal journal rhythm.
