HOW TO PLAN A PERFECT SPRING PICNIC

by Elizabeth Jordahl 15 Apr 2025

“There are few things so pleasant as a picnic eaten in perfect comfort.” — W. Somerset Maugham

Let my teaching fall like rain and my words descend like dew, like showers on new grass, like abundant rain on tender plants. - Deuteronomy 32:2

Springtime is finally here (although in Colorado, I think we might be waiting for one more snow storm!) What better way to soak in God’s beauty than with a picnic under the open sky? There’s just something about fresh air, good food, and warm sunshine that lifts the spirit. It feels like a great way to welcome spring! Whether you’re planning a family outing, a sweet friend celebration, or a quiet afternoon with your journal and a good book, a spring picnic is the perfect way to embrace the season.

Here’s how to plan a beautiful and stress-free picnic! Are you ready? Let’s go!

Picnic Maker

Nothing is better than a picnic - Zooey Deschanel

Sometimes, putting together a whole picnic can feel overwhelming. Especially when people can make picnics look so pretty and serene on social media! So let’s break it down into easy and actionable steps to help you create the perfect picnic.

  1. Location, location, location!

Pick the perfect spot. The beauty of a picnic is that it can happen anywhere—a quiet meadow, a shady park, or even your own backyard! My favorite picnic spots are national parks (they have great spots, beautiful views, and usually informational buildings too!), as well as botanic gardens (almost like a secret garden in the middle of a bustling city!). Think about the location that will fit your group. Playgrounds for kids, lovely views for dates, cozy spaces for solo adventures.

  1. Food, glorious food.

Pack simple and tasty foods. Don’t try for anything overly fancy or complicated, as it can be difficult to eat in picnic locations. Instead focus on easy, fresh and yummy! Maybe try: fresh fruit, crackers and cheese, sandwiches, lemonade in a thermos, and something sweet! If you want it to feel fancier, build a charcuterie board on the go! Or add some homemade baked goods (muffins, cookies, etc) for a delicious treat.

  1. Only the essentials

Want an extra special picnic? Or just aiming for the perfect photo op? Trying bringing along some of these things:

  • A blanket (one that is washable, and picnic ready)

  • A book or journal (you could bring a book to read out loud, or just bring along these things to make your own time special)

  • A Bluetooth speaker to play music (look up some fun picnic playlists on Spotify!)

  • Sunscreen, bug spray and wipes! (it’s always good to be prepared)

  • Sweaters (in case it gets chilly!)

  • Utensils and napkins (reusable for extra points!)

  • Want to make it extra fancy? Bring some flowers, candles, or nice cushions to sit on.

  • Bringing along your kids? Grab a kite, a frisbee, or a travel game for some extra entertainment.

  1. Who are you bringing?

Picnics are great with a group of friends, for your whole family, or even just as a chance to enjoy some solitude. This simple gathering can be a great time to build your community, get to know others or spend time with your favorites. But don’t ignore the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and time alone! Who will you bring?

  1. Do something fun!

Want to add some extra fun? Plan an activity. You could bring a game, or plan a nature walk or hike. You could bring a book or some poetry to read aloud. Grab the art supplies and sketch the scenery! And don’t forget the favorite of kids on picnics… go fly a kite! Your activity should enhance your picnic, and add to the fun. What would you do?

  1. Make the Memories!

Don’t let perfection get in the way of this picnic. Embrace the moment - messiness, ants, breezes and all! Don’t let these little things steal your joy. Picnics should be about embracing the beauty of the moment and enjoying simple gifts.

So go ahead, pack your basket (or backpack!), make your plans and head outside. Enjoy the sunshine, the great outdoors, and your practically perfect picnic. Take a deep breath, let your heart fill with gratitude, and enjoy the gifts of spring.

Happy picnicking, friend! May your heart be light, your food be delicious, and your soul be refreshed by your delightful adventure.

QUESTIONS AND REFLECTIONS

One of my favorite things to do is to ponder, reflect and journal, it gives me time to think through all the various aspects of life. May you find time in your day or your week, to sit and reflect. You can use these questions as a starting place for your reflection, or just an addition to your normal journal rhythm.

  1. Have you ever gone on a picnic? What did you like or dislike?

  2. What kind of picnic do you want to plan (location, food, environment, people, activities)?

  3. Plan your practically perfect picnic, and then reflect on the experience.

  4. Where have you seen God at work in your life lately?

  5. What’s one thing from this blog that you want to use or put into action?

The things that make me happiest in the whole world are going to the occasional picnic, either with my children or my partner; big family gatherings; and being able to go to the grocery store - if I can get those things in, I'm doing good - Kate Winslet

Be glad, people of Zion, rejoice in the LORD your God, for he has given you the autumn rains because he is faithful. He sends you abundant showers, both autumn and spring rains, as before. - Joel 2:23
